Joss Whedon, director of the fast-approaching Avengers: Age of Ultron, was speaking at a press conference in London earlier today about his future role in the Marvel universe. Upon being asked how he sees his life after leaving the director’s chair on Avengers: Infinity War, he answered, ‘I don’t think I’ll ever get that far away from it. I plan a rest – a longer rest – perhaps an eternal rest. I have no immediate plans.’
This probably means that the writer / director will stay on at Marvel Studios in some capacity as a consultant – something he has had much involvement in through his career – meaning he’ll have some influence over future MCU storylines, and how those tie into the next Avengers movies. He also spoke about Kevin Fiege’s vision of Marvel’s future – the executive producer on all the Marvel Studios movies – and he seemed quite adamant in that Feige would stay on indefinitely, and that superhero films are here to stay (for now). Here’s what he had to say:
‘He’s not interested in making a formula; he’s interested in creating a universe. How long will he do it for? Erm, until he dies…? (Laughs) He’s interested in creating new versions of the superhero movies – something that doesn’t fall into a pattern. So it’s going to be around for quite a while.’
That comes as little surprise; the Marvel movies are billion dollar franchises, and they won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
