Jurassic World trilogy planned by Steven Spielberg and Colin Trevorrow – without the studio even knowing

With Jurassic World becoming the third highest-grossing movie ever earlier in the year, it’s no surprise whatsoever that more movies are on their way. But now we know for sure that there will be two more – in effect, forming a Jurassic World trilogy all its own.

Interestingly, producer Steven Spielberg and director Colin Trevorrow apparently had a trilogy planned from the very beginning – something that even the studio behind Jurassic World, Universal Pictures, knew nothing about. Here’s an excerpt from a roundtable interview Universal’s chairman, Donna Langley, took part in, thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, where she replies on how difficult it may be to stick to Jurassic World 2‘s 2018 release date:

‘There’s no reason why we should [have trouble]. [Director] Colin Trevorrow is busy working on an outline. He’s been working with Steven [Spielberg]. And they have an idea for the next two movies actually. It was designed as a trilogy, unbeknown to us. It’s a happy surprise.’

Were both Spielberg and Trevorrow secretly hedging their bets on the success of Jurassic World? Typically, having more than one sequel planned for a film is something the studio comes up with first; this could mean a potentially good sequel, as the ideas came organically from the filmmakers themselves. But after the hugeness of the fourth movie in the franchise, where will the series be taken next? Hopefully not in the vein of The Lost World: Jurassic Park or Jurassic Park 3 – but there’s every reason to believe the people behind the movies have learned from those past mistakes.
