La La Land on course for record-breaking opening
We have mentioned the film a few times today (so once more won’t hurt) but La La Land is now out in New York and Los Angeles as it begins its box office journey that could lead to big things at next February’s Oscars. And if early Friday estimates are to be believed, the film is on course for a record-breaking opening. (via Deadline).
The musical, co-financed by Lionsgate and Black Label media and written and directed by Damien Chazelle (Whiplash), could be about to smash the limited specialty box-office opening/theatre average set by Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel back in 2013 when it grossed $811,116 from just four theatres – a location average of $202,792. If early tracking is true, La La Land could make anywhere between $800,00 to $1million that would potentially see it break the record.
Emma Stone stars in the film as Mia, an aspiring actress who meets failing jazz pianist Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and the two soon fall for each other. However, as they start to have success their love affair begins to strain.
Check back at Flickreel on Monday for the full round-up of the weekend’s box office takings.
La La Land opens in the UK on January 12th, 2017.
