Leos Carax’s upcoming film, Annette, loses its leading ladies

Filmmaker Leos Carax is one of modern cinema’s most interesting: his previous film, 2012’s Holy Motors, was met with universal praise and a plethora of awards including a Palme D’or nomination at Cannes. So interest was already high for his next project which is drama Annette, but sadly two-thirds of his cast have had to leave the project

Pitchfork are reporting that both the leading ladies have bowed out of the project for different reasons; Mara, who seems to have a jam-packed schedule right now, has left due to scheduling conflicts while a representative for Rihanna has said that the pop star will not be appearing after all and that the original reports were incorrect.

Still, there is much to look forward to with this project: Carax is one of cinema’s most innovative and visually arresting directors working right now while the sight of Adam Driver (Paterson, Silence), still onboard as the film’s male lead, is always an exciting prospect. The story reportedly revolves around “stand-up comedian, whose opera-singer wife is deceased, and his two-year-old daughter, who has a surprising gift.”

Add to that an original screenplay (their first) and new songs from Sparks, the 70’s art-pop group, and we like many others are already sold on the project and has swiftly landed on our “Most Anticipated of 2018”.

Annette will open in 2018 and starts shooting later this Spring.
