Logan expected to be one of the biggest R-rated openings ever at the box office

Logan is set to be the first R-rated Wolverine movie and it could very well break records. It’s already on track to break one record, as the widest R-rated release ever, hitting 4,100 domestic theaters this weekend, which tops 2015’s American Sniper.

Early tracking indicates that Hugh Jackman’s final outing as the claw-fisted mutant will perform extremely well at the box office. This is mainly down to heightened anticipation following rave reviews, including a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

LA Times reports that Logan “will easily become the No. 1 movie [at the box office] this weekend” as according to people who have seen pre-release audience surveys, the film will “gross more than $70 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada from Friday through Sunday.” The outlet expects the sequel to make as much as $80 million in its first weekend, “which would place it among the biggest R-rated openings ever.”

It’s still unlikely to overtake Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool debut which broke the record for an R-rated movie last year, when it opened with $132 million. Logan certainly looks set to outperform Jackman’s last solo outing though, as The Wolverine made $53-million on its 2013 debut.

Logan arrives on Friday and you can see the trailer below in the meantime:
