Logan for Best Picture at the Oscars? It’s officially the first film sent to the Academy

Logan is the first DVD screener to be sent out to Academy voters, making it an early Oscar contender. According to Deadline, “Academy campaigners often compete to be the first to send their For Your Consideration screener out, and this year the winner is: Logan.”

It’s the first time that 20th Century Fox has had one of its films sent out to the Academy before another studio, with the DVD screener landing in Academy voters’ mailboxes today. Logan remains one of the year’s best reviewed movies and arguably the strongest in the entire series of nine X-Men films.

Logan was released in March, which means if it nabs a Best Picture nomination, it will be in an elite club of rare titles that have managed a nomination after opening so early in the year. Directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, Logan perfectly marked the end of an X-Men era which could see out the series in award-winning style.
