Margot Robbie will play Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad, DC’s own supervillians-only movie which will be released in 2016, seems to be gearing up already. With David Ayer (Fury, Sabotage) attached to direct, a cast is also slowly, but surely, emerging; there are rumours of Jared Leto playing the Joker, eight years after Heath Ledger’s take on the character in The Dark Knight, but more concrete are the negotiations happening between DC and Margot Robbie. The actor is reportedly close to – if not, definitely – signing up for a role as Harley Quinn, the Joker’s own love interest and similarly anarchic sidekick. This is exciting news, mainly for two reasons; firstly, Robbie blew us away with her role as Naomi in The Wolf of Wall Street earlier this year, and there’s no reason she won’t do the same with Harley Quinn’s psychotic, loud-mouthed personality. Secondly, apart from enjoying the character on Batman: The Animated Series, this will be the first time we see Harley Quinn on cinema screens in a big budget movie.

Striking the figure of a playing card turned evil – then brought to hideous life – Harley Quinn started out as Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, a psychiatrist working at Arkham Asylum. Being seduced by her patient, the Joker, she becomes his sidekick – but both her image and origin could change for Suicide Squad.
