Matt Damon talks Jason Bourne: ‘It goes deeper than Ultimatum’
As you’re probably well aware, the first trailer for Jason Bourne debuted at the Superbowl this past weekend. Not only did it reveal the film’s title proper, but it announced that things have changed since we last saw the super-spy in 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, lead star Matt Damon spoke about how Jason Bourne fits in with the mythology of the popular series – and he had a lot of interesting things to say.
‘This is the completion of this journey that started in The Bourne Identity,’ he explains. ‘It’s part of the first three [movies], it’s not a whole new chapter… even though we’re not saying it’s the conclusion, it feels like the conclusion of my identity journey. It goes deeper than Ultimatum, basically.’ This ties in thematically with the title, Jason Bourne: it’s almost an announcement that the character has fully accepted who he is, following his years of memory loss.
He also spoke excitedly about co-star Alicia Vikander as a cyber security expert, who’ll be playing off against Tommy Lee Jones’ more classically-minded operative. ‘You have to do something great and new, and Alicia is our great and new… Introducing those two new characters, I think, is probably one of the biggest trailblazing things we’ve done in this movie… and Alicia ad Tommy Lee are two absolute heavyweights.’
Directed by Paul Greengrass, Jason Bourne is released July 29.
