Despite getting mostly positive reviews from critics, Darren Aronofsky’s mother! won’t go down as an audience favorite.

The film not only had a lackbuster opening weekend, making roughly $7.5 million according to Box Office Mojo, but it also earned a rare F rating from CinemaScore.

CinemaScore audiences typically aren’t that hard to please. For example, Fifty Shades Darker and Transformers: The Last Knight both got a B+. Movies rarely seem to get a C or D and an F is extremely uncommon. Outside of mother!, only a handful of films have received the lowest rating possible, one of the more recent cases being 2012’s Killing Them Softly.

Of course a movie as strange and disturbing as mother! clearly wasn’t designed to appease mainstream audiences. If you want to know our take on the film, be sure to check out our review and analysis of its meaning.
