Robin Williams’ death confirmed as suicide
In what comes as extremely sad news today, Robin Williams’ death has been confirmed by police as suicide by hanging. The 63 year old had been treated for depression, and was struggling with alcohol and drug abuse.
In a statement, Williams’ wife, Susan Schneider, said that “as he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”
Barack Obama said Williams “made us laugh. He made us cry.”
He was a true comedy great, and one that many of us grew up with, having starred in family movies such as Mrs Doubtfire, Jumanji and the voice of the Genie in Aladdin, along with the lead role in comedy war drama, Good Morning, Vietnam. He also took on more serious roles in Dead Poets Society, One Hour Photo, Insomnia (which he starred in alongside Al Pacino), and received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Good Will Hunting.
His body of work in stand-up comedy, TV and film goes on and on, and he will be remembered as a man who gave so much to so many of us.
