Scarlett Johansson is 2016’s “top-grossing actor”
The annual list of the “highest-grossing” actors of the year has been released by Forbes and Scarlett Johansson is 2016’s No.1 ahead of her Captain America: Civil War co-stars Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jnr. The list, published this week, showcases the year’s top-grossers in the acting stakes and with comic-book and superhero movies again pulling in big business, the majority of the top ten is unsurprising.
The site calculates this list by adding up “the 2016 global ticket sales of the top actors’ films, using data from Box Office Mojo.” No animated films where only actors voices are used were counted, which would have seen Johansson pull further ahead given her involvement in Disney’s The Jungle Book and animated hit Sing, which was released in the US over Christmas.
What did count of Johansson was Civil War, which takes the big chunk of her win, as well as the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! For the majority of the names on the list, their place is lead by films or properties (superheroes, Star Wars etc) rather than them as the leading actor of the film.
Strangely, Will Smith is on this list and also topped Forbes’ most overpaid actor list produced earlier this month. Here’s the list and grosses:
1. Scarlett Johansson – $1.2billion
2. Chris Evans – $1.15billion
3. Robert Downey Jr. – $1.15billion
4. Margot Robbie – $1.1billion
5. Amy Adams – $1.04billion
6. Ben Affleck – $1.02billion
7. Henry Cavill – $870million
8. Ryan Reynolds – $820million
9. Felicity Jones – $805million
10. Will Smith – $775million
