Shrek sequel in the works

NBCUniversal looks set to revive the Shrek franchise with a fifth-instalment in the works.

NBCUniversal recently acquired DreamWorks Animation and Steve Burke, who is in charge of the studio, told investors via Deadline on Tuesday that they have set a goal of releasing four new animated films each year. This will double what Dreamworks were originally producing.

With the recent reshape of the company, Illumination Entertainment’s Chris Meledandri (Despicable Me producer) is now in charge of creative vision:

“He is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect Shrek and take a lot of the existing DreamWorks franchises and add value as we create new franchises.”

Shrek 5 comes two years after DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg revealed that there was “another chapter” of the story to be told.

The fourth film in the series, Shrek Forever After, made more than $750 million at the box office. But no doubt, they’ll be looking to make even more with the upcoming sequel.
