Sigourney Weaver teases Avatar sequels and her Defenders villain

When Avatar was released in 2009, it rampaged through box office records and ended up becoming the highest-grossing film of all time with over $2.78billion and revolutionised 3D cinema. Sequels have been mooted every since with James Cameron carefully preparing them but if you believe star Sigourney Weaver, we are in for another treat when they finally reach the screen.

Talking to Variety, Weaver said: “In my opinion, the three scripts I’ve read so far are many times more amazing than the first one in terms of their scope… (James Cameron) did a lot of the heavy lifting in the first movie, establishing the family and the relationships and the world, and now he really gets to play.”

Weaver has a very busy 2017 coming up: not content with potentially filming Avatar 2 and starring in the acclaimed A Monster Calls (which opens in the UK on New Year’s Day), Weaver is also playing the main villain in Marvel and Netflix’s superhero team-up The Defenders which premieres next year.

On her big bad, Weaver is as secretive as you would expect but she did say it’s quite the role for her: “I can’t say much, because they might kill me. I think everyone I work for might kill me if I tell you anything. But I have the most delicious character. She’s really smart, and she’s very in charge.”

Avatar 2 is rumoured to be released in December 2018 with Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana also returning.

The Defenders sees Weaver alongside Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Danny Rand/Iron Fist.
