Sony could lose Bond deal
Following the release of Spectre later this year, Sony Pictures could be facing the worrying possibility that they may no longer have their deal with 007. Sony co-finances and distributes the 007 films, with an agreement with Metro Goldwyn-Mayer, the studio behind the Bond movies – but that deal is due to expire when the newest film finally hits. Tom Rothman, speaking to Variety, said, ‘sure we’re going to compete for [the rights] but, let’s be honest, so is everybody in the business.’
So who’s looking to get into this lucractive deal if Sony can’t get it again? Apparently, Warner Bros. is their chief competitor (definitely somewhat of a possibility, thanks to MGM and Warner Bros.’ very lucrative relationship with The Hobbit franchise). Of course, there is the small matter of Skyfall, which Sony helped get it to become the highest grossing film in the UK. Sony may have to wait until Spectre is released – on November 6 this year – to hear MGM’s decision.
