Sony creates new casting position after #OscarsSoWhite controversy

After the race row surrounding this year’s Oscar ceremony, Sony Pictures has appointed a black woman in a newly-created position.

Tamara Hunter has been appointed vice president of casting. She will “oversee the theatrical casting strategy and work with the creative team to identify and deliver talent to the studio’s slate of films.”

She makes the move from Twentieth Century Fox where her projects included Hidden Figures, The Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Jungle Book.

Hunter told Essence that she is “thrilled” to join Sony: “I’ve got a fresh point of view that I’m excited and eager to share through this amazing opportunity.

“It is important to me to take the current social momentum we are experiencing now, and push further and be bolder with casting strategy and decisions in filmmaking – both in terms of diversity and having a strong global perspective.”
