Star Trek 3 title revealed – along with first set photo
After quite a bit of speculation, it’s finally been confirmed that the title of Star Trek 3 – as heavily rumoured – will be Star Trek Beyond. The film’s director, Justin Lin, tweeted the first photograph from the set:
This little tweet actually reveals quite a bit of information: not only do we have the official title, but the logo describes Starfleet, meaning we have moved on from the Academy of the first two films. This would follow on from (potential spoilers for Star Trek Into Darkness) the years-long mission deep space hinted at right at the end of Star Trek Into Darkness. What’s still not 100% clear, however, is whether the film’s title is going to make use of a colon, or follow suit like its predecessor Star Trek Into Darkness. Or it could just be because Twitter hashtags doesn’t like punctuation marks.
The tweet also comes with the message #LLAP – presumably Live Long And Prosper. Of course, that’s a standard Star Trek message, but we’re certain Lin also means it as a small tribute to the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy, who died earlier this year. Lin himself is new to the Star Trek universe, having experience mainly in the Fast & Furious franchise, and currently directing a few episodes of the new season of True Detective. The director has a lot of style, and we’re looking forward to seeing him put that style into deep space.
Star Trek Beyond will be released July 8, 2016.
