Star Wars: Rogue One underperforms in China
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may have exceeded expectations across the globe but it appears to have underperformed in China.
Box office analysts had predicted that the Star Wars spin-off would be closer to the earnings that The Force Awakens made in that part of the world. However, Rogue One in it’s first week in China, has made over $20 million less than Episode 7 did during it’s debut week.
Rogue One did still take the number one spot at the weekend though, with $31 million at the Chinese box office so far.
With Chinese actors Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen starring in the film, it was expected to appeal to that market much more, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, bad air pollution in northern China over the weekend may have affected sales.
Rogue One has still done remarkably well and is already close to breaking the $1 billion landmark worldwide.
