Star Wars: The Force Awakens Takes Largest Domestic Box Office Weekend of All Time

Perhaps unsurprisingly, when we consider that it had already set first-day pre-sale records, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has opened to the largest domestic weekend box office haul of all time. It has earned an estimated $238 million in its first three days in the US, and a phenomenal $517 million worldwide – the latter figure being just shy of the $524.9 record set by Jurassic World earlier this year, but that film also opened in China, whereas The Force won’t be awakening there until 9 January next year. When we consider that the budget for the movie stands at around a relatively measly $200 million, it means that the movie alone (regardless of any merchandising tie-ins, etc.) will have already nearly become profitable. It also goes a long way to justifying the $4.05 billion which Disney spent on buying Lucasfilm, the company behind Star Wars, from George Lucas in 2012.
