When news broke last week that seminal sci-fi thriller The Matrix was being revamped there was a mixed reception to the news: some thought the idea was preposterous and that such a work of brilliance should not be remake while others had some positive reactions to the news and thought that a new version, in whatever form, would be a worthwhile endeavour.

  • Strangerland - Review

Of the Australian movies that reach other shores, most show a sense of craft that reaffirms just what thrillers can accomplish. From the past six years alone: Animal KingdomThe Rover, Snowtown, Mystery Road, The Mule – and more – have all helped refine genre elements into something approaching a total national mastery. Sadly, the newest export, Strangerland, doesn’t enter the same league – or even the leagues below – such great fare, but it does boast a terrific performance or two, and an overbearing sense of mystery and dread that should keep even the most hungry genre hounds happy.

Sometimes, a film will slip through your fingers for one reason or another. And sometimes, a film won’t even get a chance to do even that; The Smuggler (AKA The Mule) is an Australian hit that hasn’t managed to find its way in cinemas on the other side of the globe, but fortunately has landed on VOD platforms and DVD – so the sad possibility of missing out on this great film, and others like it, is hopefully a thing of the past.

The Smuggler tells the mostly-true tale of a drug smuggle…

Absurd and inane and wonderfully irreverent, it’s just a shame it doesn’t play up to such tropes in a more consistent manner.

  • Mortal Engines trailer is like Mad Max taken up to eleven

Mad Max: Fury Road was one of the most mind-blowing action films of the 21st century. It looks like producer Peter Jackson and director Christian Rivers are trying to top that with Mortal Engines, at least based on the film’s epic trailer.
