Stephen King’s IT: First reactions from critics

ORIGINAL STORY:

The first reactions are in from advanced screenings of Stephen King’s IT. The upcoming movie adaptation is directed by Andy Muschietti and the early response to the film is extremely positive.

With reviews from critics currently embargoed, a few lucky enough to see early test screenings have shared their reactions online. Although we can’t guarantee that they’re genuine, the level of detail in their feedback suggests they may very well be legit.

They describe the film as “one of the best horror movies of the past 5 years” with “outstanding performances” as Bill Skarsgård is “phenomenal” as Pennywise. See a selection of the impressive reactions below:

What an utterly delightful wicked haunted house ride this re-imagining of King’s story is, so much so that I’m inclined to call this the best onscreen horror adaptation since 1990’s Misery! As far as memorable scares go, this packs a wallop, with substantial amounts of blood and carnage and enough children-in-peril scenarios to give any parent or guardian anxiety. Sticking closer to the source material is definitely one of the films reasons why it works so well, along with what’s become one of the years most anticipated performances as Pennywise, Bill Skarsgard is perfectly evil despite minimal screen time – 3.5/5

One of the best horror movies of the past 5 years. Much, much better than the TV version from 1990. I would have to say this is the best adaptation of a Steven King book, Bill Skarsgard is phenomenal as Pennywise, putting Tim Curry’s version to shame – 4.5/5

We’ll be sure to update the page with more reactions when we get them, as well as the first more reliable press reviews. IT arrives on September 8th. In related news, IT is projected to be the biggest September opening of all time:
