He may be a big fan of Star Wars but Steven Spielberg has vowed to never direct a film in the franchise.

Toronto Sun reports that Spielberg made the comments while at a press event for his upcoming film, The BFG:

“It’s certainly my buddy’s, the Thomas Edison of science fiction, George Lucas, who created the entire series. But that was never for me. I’m just a fan; I’m just with everybody else in the audience watching them.”

Spielberg has played a part in the recent and upcoming Star Wars films, however. As he suggested that J.J. Abrams should helm The Force Awakens, and also discovered new, young Han Solo, Alden Ehrenreich.

He also reportedly turned down the chance to direct 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Probably a lucky escape there for Spielberg!

“I’m just a fan; I’m just with everybody else in the audience watching them.”

Next up for Spielberg is The BFG which hits theaters on July 1.
