Even though the R-rated Deadpool has made nearly $800 million at the box office, that didn’t make DC want to completely rethink the much-anticipated Suicide Squad while in the middle of shooting. The dark and violent supervillian team-up (it is helmed by Fury director David Ayer, after all), looks like it could easily fit into the same R-rated mode as Ryan Reynolds’ foul-mouthed antihero – but the MPAA has just announced the official rating.
Suicide Squad will be a PG-13, reads a new listing on Box Office Mojo – just what we were expecting, really. News of an R-rated Wolverine has made many X-fans rejoice, but Suicide Squad was already far into shooting when Deadpool had his massive success – but it probably wouldn’t be too far outside of the box to imagine it receiving the R-rated treatment on a DVD / Blu-ray release, much like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is getting this year.
The listing states that Suicide Squad includes ‘sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content and language’ – so expect the film to push the boundaries of a PG-13 rating, which will equate to a 12A in the UK.
Suicide Squad is released on August 5 this year.
