2015 Had the Second Biggest Summer Box Office Ever

Summer 2015 brought us a number of commercial failures like Tomorrowland, Pixels, and Fantastic Four. Even with all those box office duds, however, this past summer was still the second biggest in history. Between May 1st and Labor Day weekend, domestic ticket sales reached $4.48 billion. The numbers are up 10.4% from 2014, which had the worst box office intake in seven years. Even with Jurassic World and Avengers: Age of Ultron, though, this summer still fell short of 2013, which brought in $4.75 billion. If only Star Wars: The Force Awakens had come out over the summer, this could have been an all time record.

Here are the top 10 highest-grossing movies of the summer as of now. Keep in mind that Straight Outta Compton will likely only climb higher as it’s still performing quite well at the box office and September is mostly a wasteland for movies.

3. Inside Out – $349.6 million
4. Minions – $329.8 million
5. Pitch Perfect 2 – $183.8 million
6. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation – $182.5 million
7. Ant-Man – $174.1 million
8. San Andreas – $154.3 million
9. Mad Max: Fury Road – $153 million
10. Straight Outta Compton – $150 million
