The Crow remake gets (another) new director

The remake of the classic 1994 movie The Crow has been cycling through a number of changes in its journey to the big screen. Corin Hardy is the latest director to step up to the plate, replacing F. Javier Gutiérrez (who’ll be hanging around as an executive producer on the film). Hardy, who was apparently recommended for the role by a certain Edgar Wright, will be directing a screenplay by Cliff Dorman. As far as directing goes, Hardy has a dab hand at making music videos for Ed Sheeran, Keane, and The Prodigy, and is currently in the middle of production on his debut feature The Hallow. The only major constant in The Crow has been Luke Evans, who’s been signed on to star as the lead, played by Brandon Lee in the original – but even now, he’s stated his own cold feet for the project. ‘I have other projects that are greenlit and ready to go and projects that I’m very interested in,’ he told Den of Geek, ‘and you know, I can’t wait much longer! [laughs]’

The term ‘remake’, however, doesn’t hold water for James O’Barr, who wrote and drew the comics the ’94 The Crow was based on, and who is acting as a consultant on the new movie. In comments to Deadline, he said, ‘We’re not remaking the movie, we’re readapting the book’. Also interesting to note is Hardy’s visual style: his 2003 short Butterfly is an exceptionally bizarre and beautiful piece of work, while his music videos also rate highly on the weirdness scale – but weirdly enough for The Crow?
