The Interview to be released on Netflix

After last year’s debacle concerning The Interview – the Seth Rogen / James Franco comedy that Sony pulled because of terror threats from North Korea – the film was pulled from theatrical distribution. Soon after, the movie became available on many VOD outlets, but only in the US. And now, continuing that trend, the film will also be getting released on the biggest streaming site, Netflix, for US and Canadian customers. It was revealed that the movie is scheduled to appear on the site on Saturday January 24th in Netflix’s quarterly earnings letter, also mentioning it as an ‘exclusive’. Here’s the part of the letter regarding this:

‘We are thrilled to offer exclusively the controversial comedy, The Interview, to our US and Canadian members beginning this Saturday, Jan. 24 – just thirty days after it debuted in theaters and pay-per-view.’

Even though the online release of The Interview made $40 million, it still didn’t make a profit – will a scheduled release on Netflix help Sony out? And does this mention of ‘exclusive’ mean that the  movie will be pulled from other online streaming and rental sites? UK cinemas will be getting the film on February 6 – just under two weeks from the American / Canadian Netflix rollout. But how longer will the rest of the world have to wait to see The Interview?
