The Lego Movie sequel will get a rewrite from Bojack Horseman’s creator – and that’s a good thing

There’s a good chance The Lego Movie was one of your favourite films of recent years: full of belly laughs and driven by disarmingly moving themes, it was one of those projects that just should never have been anywhere near as good as it turned out. Of course, Warner Bros. are now turning out multiple movies and spin-offs, including The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie – but chief among them is the film’s direct sequel. Of course, original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are a little busy with the Han Solo standalone Star Wars flick, so Community alumni Rob Schrab is stepping up – and according to Variety, joining him to do a rewrite on the script will be Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of Bojack Horseman.

The addition can only be a very, very good thing: if you haven’t seen Bojack Horseman, it’s a show about a washed-up sitcom actor who gets another shot at fame – and he just happens to be a horse. It’s by far the best thing Netflix have produced as of yet (with a third season arriving on the streaming platform July 22), and Bob-Waksberg’s inclusion in the writing process of The Lego Movie‘s sequel sounds like it could be a shot in the arm to lift what will be a first-time feature-directing job for Schrab up to the surreal heights of the first movie. Both The Lego Movie and Bojack Horseman are meta, in differing ways – and it should prove to be the perfect marriage of comedy and insight for the sequel.

The Lego Movie 2 (it’s yet to receive an official title) is due for a release on February 8, 2019 – so we’ve a while yet until we see the fruits of their labours. In the meantime, do yourself a huge favour and watch Bojack Horseman on Netflix.
