The Purge 3 will be released in summer 2016
While 2013’s The Purge failed to become the cult classic that its excellent premise suggested (where for one night a year, all crime becomes legal in the US), last year’s The Purge: Anarchy fared a bit better with critics. Taking the same premise away from the household and opening it up to the city streets, the excitement was ramped up – and its political themes became more engaging, too. And now we’ve learned that Universal are planning The Purge 3, with an official title yet to be announced, for the summer of 2016. The exact date will be July 1 – the same weekend of release for Spielberg’s The BFG and Tarzan – and will be directed by James DeMonaco, who helmed the first two. For a horror / thriller franchise, The Purge 3 will be rather unique in that respect; the same creative voice will once again be at the centre. With all three films having the same director, The Purge series is lent consistency in both tone and story choices – so when The Purge 3 finally comes out, it could make for a well-respected trilogy.
