Thor: Ragnarok is more of a standalone film

Rather than being the ending to a trilogy, Thor: Ragnarok is reportedly more of a standalone film.

Speaking with i09, director Taika Waititi mentioned that Ragnarok would distinguish itself from Thor and Thor: The Dark World, feeling less like a direct sequel.

“To be honest, what I did was I tried to approach it as if there were no other films,” Waititi stated. “I wanted to make this a standalone film.

“I loved Thor 1 and Thor 2, but if I was going to make this film my own I couldn’t come in and try to make a follow-on movie, to try to make the next episode. I wanted to do my own thing.”

This isn’t a huge surprise, as some of the major characters from the previous Thor films will be absent. Instead of Jane Foster, Erik Selvig, and Darcy Lewis, we’ll be getting Cate Blanchett as Hela, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. On paper, that sounds like a good trade and could make for a more unique experience.

Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3, 2017.
