Earlier this year, Til It Happens To You from The Hunting Ground received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. Written by Lady Gaga and Diane Warren, this powerful, haunting, and oddly uplifting ballad spoke to victims of sexual assault everywhere. The song was a favorite to win on Oscar Sunday and received a standing ovation at the ceremony. Alas, the Academy Award ultimately went to Writings on the Wall from Spectre, further demonstrating that Oscar’s Best Original Song category needs change.

Til It Happens To You also received recognition at the Grammy Awards where it was nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media. It lost that award, however, to Glory from Selma. While it didn’t win gold at the Oscars or Grammys, Til It Happens To You could still take home an Emmy in September.

Since The Hunting Ground aired on CNN, it was able to compete for the 2016 Emmy Awards. Til It Happens To You received a nomination for Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics. This makes it the first song ever to get nominated for an Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy. Even if the song loses all three bids, that’s still a pretty impressive achievement.

Since Til It Happens To You has an Oscar nomination and Grammy nomination to its credit, one would think it would be a lock to win at the Emmys. The song will face stiff competition, however. Also among the nominated songs are Settle For Me from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Good People from Empire, A New Season from Galavant, and Frozen Lullaby from Garfunkel and Oates: Trying To Be Special.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Empire, Garfunkel and Oates, and Galavant are four shows that regularly turn out new original songs. It should also be noted that the music from Galavant was composed by Alan Menken, who’s best known for his work on Disney’s animated features. If Menken wins here, he’ll official EGOT, which means to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.

It’s additionally worth mentioning that on the Emmy nomination list, Diane Warren is credited for Til It Happens To You. Yet, Lady Gaga’s name is nowhere to be found. What gives?
