Let’s be honest, we’d all like to see a Groot spin-off film, wouldn’t we? Vin Diesel certainly would…

The marketing machine is slowly kicking into hyperdrive in preparation for director James Gunn’s much-anticipated sequel Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol.2, with Gunn himself sharing this week that he was at Abbey Road Studios scoring the film before its release. But it’s one of his stars, Vin Diesel, who has been talking about the sequel on his recent worldwide promotional tour for his latest film, xXx: Return of Xander Cage, and the star is keen to see his character Groot get his on MCU movie.

Speaking to MTV, Diesel said that their is talk of a solo outing for the tree-like character – and he wouldn’t hestitate if it was ever offered to him, saying:

“it’s something that [Guardians writer/director] James Gunn has talked about and it’s something that I know he would love to do. Sure, I think it could be very interesting. I think it’s inevitable…. I think what Marvel has done, primarily what James Gunn has done, to realise that character has exceeded beyond any expectations”.

Whether or not the character has the neccesary back-story to fill his own film, but with the response to the character in the first film and the revelation of Baby Groot in the first Guardians 2 trailer, Diesel thinks there are many possibilities for where they could go, continuing:

“he’s just such an interesting character and there’s so much to learn about him … I’d love to go back to his planet and learn more about him and the world would. He’s really a genius in a lot of levels, it’s just that we can only hear him say ‘I am Groot’ because of our sophistication level, not his.”

xXx: Return of Xander Cage is in cinemas now; Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol.2 opens on April 25th.
