What could the new Star Wars title mean? When is the trailer released?

Yesterday, Disney and Lucasfilm released the title of the next Star Wars film. Following on from The Force Awakens, Episode 8 goes by the name of The Last Jedi. The title has of course sparked many debates amongst fans, and so let’s look at the possible meanings behind it and when we can expect a trailer.

With just a few words and a logo being the only details we have of the film, we can only really speculate as to what the sequel will entail. But the most obvious giveaway is the choice of words… The Last Jedi… immediately we are left wondering who in a galaxy far, far away this is!

Well, one big potential clue comes from the opening crawl in The Force Awakens, as Luke Skywalker was referred to as “the last Jedi.”

So it seems likely that Episode 8 will focus on Luke’s journey and return. But if Luke is the last Jedi, what does that say about Rey?

Many have also questioned the use of the word “Jedi”. Whether it’s singular or plural? In Attack of the Clones, Mace Windu uses Jedi as plural. Which means the title doesn’t necessarily imply that there’s only one Jedi left. So it may refer to both Luke and Rey.

Samuel L. Jackson played Mace Windu

That’s unless The Last Jedi means the end of Luke and consequently sees Rey as the only surviving Jedi. The red logo doesn’t bode well for the rebels, as Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith both used the same color, and featured major deaths.

Mark Hamill is certainly a fan of the title it seems anyway:

As for the film’s first trailer release, The Force Awakens had its first teaser revealed over a year in advance, The Last Jedi’s trailer is arriving later to give Rogue One ‘room to breath’.

In fact, LucasFilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy has said that we shouldn’t expect any The Last Jedi footage until “Spring’. But going back to when The Force Awakens’ title was revealed, just three weeks later and the first trailer was unveiled.

With the SuperBowl in two weeks time, could it arrive as early as then? It seems more likely that they’ll hold off for the Star Wars Celebration in April though.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
