Where was Nick Fury in Captain America: Civil War?
Almost every major player from the Marvel Cinematic Universe made an appearance in Captain America: Civil War. There were a few notable omissions, however. We already know why Thor and the Hulk weren’t present, but what about Nick Fury?
In an interview with the LA Times, the screenwriters of Civil War delved into why Fury was absent from the film.
“Primarily it felt like one too many possible opinions”, said screenwriter Christopher Markus. “We didn’t want him to take one side or the other, because that’s not his place in the universe.”
“We didn’t want another, ‘Is he still with the government? Is he opposed to the government but supporting the government?’, Markus went on. “It got to be the potential for a lot more polemic discussion that the movie did not have room for.
“He’s the guy who put it together. He’s been the sort of parent figure to the Avengers. Let the parent go away, and see if the kids can handle this. See if the kids can be who they’re supposed to be without that governing voice. Um… and they didn’t do that good of a job.”
Markus and co-writer Stephen McFeely are also working on the script for Avengers: Infinity War. McFeely says that he “would think” that Fury would pop up in this two-part superhero epic.
The directors of Captain America: Civil War previously talked about Nick Fury’s future in the MCU, which you can read more about here.
