Will Better Call Saul Continue into Present Day?

Better Call Saul has continued the legacy of Breaking Bad, delving into how Jimmy McGill became Saul Goodman. The first season primarily focused on Jimmy’s backstory, taking place before Walter White’s transformation into Heisenberg. With season two on the horizon, however, many people have wondered if the show will forever remain a prequel.

In the pilot episode of Better Call Saul, we briefly saw the former lawyer in his new life as a Cinnabon employee. There’s been much speculation regarding whether we’ll see more of Saul’s future in upcoming episodes. IGN recently asked Bob Odenkirk if the show could ever continue into present day. Odenkirk responded, “Absolutely. Oh yeah. That’s my dream. To see this character in an even third or fourth iteration.”

Season one of Better Call Saul ended up being another big hit for AMC, earning 7 Primetime Emmy nominations. Odenkirk wasn’t 100% confident the show would work at first, though. “I wasn’t just nervous, I thought we’d get our asses kicked,” he said. “Not because we didn’t think we did good work, just because I thought there’d be a backlash for us even trying to to do anything related to Breaking Bad.”

Odenkirk added that he was unaware where the story would be going ahead of time. “I had no idea what it would be about or where it go or how fast it would move or how much it would focus on the character.”

Since Odenkirk doesn’t entirely know what Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have cooked up, it’s hard to say when or if Better Call Saul might catch up to the present. However, season 2 is currently set to premiere in 2016.
