It’s possible that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story won’t have an opening crawl.
Talking to Entertainment Tonight at the 2016 Star Wars Celebration, Kathleen Kennedy of Lucasfilm stated that she “doesn’t think” any of the standalone Star Wars movies will have a crawl. Episode VIII and Episode IX will still preserve this tradition, however.
“You know, we’re in the midst of talking about it, but I don’t think these films will have an opening crawl,” Kennedy said.
Director Gareth Edwards also commented, “I think basically there’s a lot of things that I probably can’t talk about, is probably the safest way to answer that,” he said. “The idea is this film is supposed to be different than the saga films…the whole crawl of it all – it’s funny people are fascinated on that.”
It’s hard to imagine a Star Wars movie opening without a crawl. Then again, Rogue One won’t necessarily be a traditional Star Wars movie, as it takes place just before the events of A New Hope. Whether it has a crawl or not, here’s hoping the film opens with a bang.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
